Study drugs can have serious health and legal consequences

Going to college is often an event to which many young people look forward. A number of these individuals may be attending the University of West Georgia and living away from their parents for the first time. While this can certainly present an appealing sense of freedom to you, it also means that you may face temptations with which you have not previously had to contend.

While you may consider yourself a good student and do not find the idea of drinking at college parties appealing, you may still fall victim to a number of potential downfalls that college campuses can present. In particular, you may find yourself overwhelmed by your course loads, and the idea of falling behind in your classes may be unbearable. As a result, you may take a friend up on the offer of study drugs.

ADHD medications

The drugs most typically used by students to aid them in staying focused longer are prescriptions used for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Some of these prescriptions go by the following names:

  • Ritalin
  • Adderall
  • Focalin
  • Vyvanse
  • Concerta

Because these medications strengthen the cognitive function of those struggling with ADHD, many students think that the drugs can offer them the same benefits, even if they have no medical need.

Side effects

These medications are also habit-forming, which means that a person who starts taking them could become addicted. While it may not seem dangerous to take a prescription medication, if you do not have the proper medical supervision, you could easily overdose and suffer side effects like liver failure, stroke or even a heart attack.

Other side effects that do not have to do with your health include the possibility of facing criminal charges. If a police officer finds you in possession of a prescription medication that does not belong to you, or if you are selling your medication, you could wind up in a serious legal predicament. Before completely panicking, you may want to remember that you do have the opportunity to defend against any allegations brought against you.

College should be an exciting time in your life, but if you face a conviction for drug possession or distribution, your future could easily begin to look grim. Therefore, you may want to review your legal options for finding the best course of action available.
